How do you explain Yoga to a child?

I want to introduce my kid to yoga, how do I explain what it is?

Firstly, that’s awesome! Yoga is such a wonderful life tool and I wish I had been introduced to it at a young age!  I also want my kids to learn to love yoga so I thought about how to explain it to little ones and this is what I came up with:

Just like how you play games, yoga is a fun way to move your body and use your imagination. It’s like a game where you move your body in special ways while pretending to be animals, trees, or even astronauts. Yoga helps your body become strong and flexible. It also helps you feel calm and relaxed. It’s like giving your muscles and mind a big, cozy hug.

Why Yoga is Awesome for Kids:

  1. Super Focus Power: Just like a superhero concentrating on a tricky puzzle, yoga helps you pay attention better in school and at playtime.
  2. Happy Feelings: Yoga makes you feel cheerful and joyful. It’s like a magical potion that chases away grumpy clouds.
  3. Strong and Bendy: Remember how your toys have different shapes? Yoga poses are like making your body into cool shapes, making your muscles strong and your body bendy.
  4. Sleepy Magic: Yoga helps you sleep like a baby dragon, all comfy and cozy in your bed.
  5. Friendship Fun: You can do yoga with your friends too! It’s like having a secret club where everyone gets to be silly and strong together.

Fun Yoga Poses for Kids:

  1. Tree Pose: Stand tall like a strong tree and sway in the wind. Balance on one foot and imagine your toes are roots digging into the ground.
  2. Downward Dog: Pretend you’re a dog stretching and wagging your tail up high. This pose is great for making your legs and back strong.
  3. Butterfly Pose: Sit down, put your feet together, and gently flap your knees like butterfly wings. It’s a cozy pose that helps your hips relax.
  4. Cobra Pose: Lie on your tummy and lift your head up like a snake. It’s awesome for making your back strong and tall.

Where Can You Do Kids’ Yoga?

These days you can probably find fun kids’ yoga classes in your neighborhood. Just search for “kids yoga near me” online. You can also easily practice at home, there are tonnes of exciting kids’ yoga videos on Youtube or you can read yoga stories and books together.

Doing yoga with kids at home

Step 1: Set Up a Cozy Space: Designate a tranquil and inviting area where you and your child can enjoy yoga together without distractions.

Step 2: Comfortable Attire: Both you and your child should wear comfy clothes that allow for movement. Let the focus be on enjoyment and exploration.

Step 3: Begin with Warm-ups: Start with gentle warm-up activities like reaching upwards, touching toes, and wiggling fingers and toes to prepare the body for movement.

Step 4: Choose an Adventure: Select a theme for your yoga session, such as a journey to the rainforest or a space odyssey. Encourage your child’s imagination to take the lead.

Step 5: Explore Poses Together: Try out poses together, mirroring each other’s movements. Breathe deeply and encourage your child to embody the characters they’re pretending to be.

Step 6: Relaxation and Mindfulness: Wind down with relaxation exercises. Lie down comfortably, close your eyes, and guide your child through calming breaths and visualization.

Step 7: Share the Experience: After your yoga session, engage in a conversation with your child. Ask about their favorite poses and what parts of the adventure they enjoyed the most.

Embrace the Joy of Yoga Together

As a parent who cherishes the gift of yoga, you have the incredible opportunity to introduce your child to a practice that nurtures both body and soul. By weaving playfulness, imagination, and well-being into your child’s daily routine, you’re creating a foundation for a healthier, happier life.
